Proverbs 31:22 - Seamstress of Valor

Updated: Aug 21, 2022

This vintage-inspired dress is made from a blue, green, and white plaid flannel twin-sized bed sheet. The dress has a straight-edge neckline in the front and a v-neck in the back. The skirt is comprised of six gores, with the volume in the sides. The skirt is tea-length on me (5'4" tall) but appears to be knee-length in the pattern. It can be worn with a long petticoat, but the flannel tends to be heavier that the petticoat can support. The pattern is the Maisel Dress from Mood Fabrics.

The Bible makes mention of modesty in clothing but separates it from looking slovenly. As representatives of the Kingdom, we should look well-put together. Notably, Proverbs 31 speaks on clothings, particularly from a woman's perspective. The Woman of Valor chapter mentions clothing multiple times, especially this verse:

"She makes her own luxurious coverings. Her clothing is fine linen and purple."(Proverbs 31:22 TLV)

This dress is not purple nor is it linen, but it's the New England equivalent. It's flannel for the cold seasons and plaid. Purple was seen as the premier color to wear, a sign of status and wealth. I feel that in New England, plaid has the same effect.

In this verse of the proverb, it's showing the ability of the Woman of Valor. The ability to not only mend but make your own clothes opens many doors. If something doesn't fit, you can alter it or create a new version yourself. The proverb makes explicit mention of luxurious coverings. I've had many pieces that I've made that would certain be expensive to buy from a brand, but I made them for much cheaper. This dress, being flannel, a woven fabric (fitted to my body specifically, where knit fabrics can fit a multitude of sizes), and having a specific color palette, would be expensive to buy new.

This dress acts as a testament to the range that my sewing ability gives me. While this may seem a compliment to myself, it's instead due to God. He gives me the ability to find thrifting deals, perfect patterns, inspiration. Any notice given to this dress is notice that is redirected to God. If someone asks me, why do I sew my own clothes, I can confidently respond that it is a biblical concept, indeed a valorous tenet.
