Jeremiah 29:11 - A Secure Future

Updated: Jul 28, 2022

This quilt is in a staggered brick and half-brick pattern. The half-brick is a solid dark grey cotton making diagonal stripes. The full bricks are made from a jellyroll set of cute country fabrics of plaid, cotton, birds, and miscellaneous country patterns. The backing is the same dark grey cotton. The binding is a scrappy binding made from the print fabric.

This quilt was made as a gift for family friends who had just had a baby. The quilt is crib-sized. The design may seem quite grown-up but we didn't want to make a cutesy pastel blanket that wouldn't get any future usage after one year old.

The verse we chose for this was meant to be a reminder and assurance to the parents that their new baby's future is in God's hands.

"'For I know the plans that I have in mind for you,' declares Adonai, 'plans for shalom and not calamity—to give you a future and a hope.'" (Jeremiah 29:11 TLV)

In Jeremiah 29, God is giving Jeremiah a prophecy concerning what will happen after the seventy years of exile in Babylon. After the fulfillment of the time in Babylon, God says, He will take them from Babylon and restore them to their land. Here, they will return to God and worship Him again.

God is reminding them that though time in Babylon isn't fun, being in exile and no longer in the Promised Land. However, He's with them the entire time. The moment the seventy years are over, He will bring them Himself from Babylon back to Israel. There, they will live in peace.

I chose this verse for the parents as raising a child has some sweet moments, but many of the earlier years have their own share of troubles. There are times that the end, when the child is now an adult and is honoring the parents, seems like it will never come. Or there may be times that the parents worry about the future of their new baby. The economic conditions, the political climate, how will these affect their baby growing up? When they are an adult, what world awaits them? God says, I have peace for you. A future with no worries or strife, where in Me you are secure. I smile thinking that this baby will be under a quilt that reminds them and their family of the security that only God can provide.
