Genesis 15:5 - Immeasurable, Innumerable

This quilt is twin-bed sized but also can cover the top surface of a double. It is space themed, with a block and sashing pattern from space-themed fat quarters and black cotton. The border fabric used to be a bed skirt.

This quilt was made as a gift for my brother, who loves all things space. The bed skirt was his twin bed skirt in his childhood room and was repurposed here.

The verse for this quilt is:

'"He took him outside and said, “Look up now, at the sky, and count the stars—if you are able to count them.” Then He said to him, “So shall your seed be.”' (Genesis 15:5 TLV)

God is talking with Abraham here, still at the time Abram. This chapter deals with the promise to Abraham, that he would have many children and birth a great nation. It also prophecies the enslavement in Egypt, foreshadowing the 400 years of slavery. God also gives Abraham assurance. Even though his people will be enslaved, God will bring them out far more wealthy then they were before. In addition, God details the lands that will belong to Abraham's progeny. God lists many of the great tribes around Canaan and beyond, saying that the land that they now occupy will belong to Abraham's descendants.

It is a massive promise to Abraham. Not only does God promise Abraham an heir, He also describes hundreds of years in the future. Though there will be hardships, Abraham's children will always end better than before. They will inhabit more land than Abraham can fathom.

God frequently uses ideas bigger than Abraham can image to illustrate His point. Can Abraham count the stars? Can he count the grains of sand on the beach? God has something planned for Abraham, and for you, that is bigger than the innumerable. Think of the largest thing you can imagine. God's plan for you is bigger. His provision and plan for your future is so much bigger than anything you can count or imagine. This is the wonder of being an almighty God. He has planned for us things that we can never grasp with our human understanding.

Next time you look at the night sky and see the stars, try to count them. It's a pointless endeavor. You could spend your entire life counting stars, but they would move, some would die, and some would come to life. For how big the night sky is, God's plan for your life is so much bigger. He isn't the God of a little blessing here, a little favor there. He's the God of immeasurable, boundless, limitless blessings and favor.
