Ezekiel 28:13 - Walk with God in Eden

This quilt is made from only two fabrics, a white sheet and a dark blue sheet. The fabrics were previously used as bedspreads or curtains. Sheets are made to go against the skin, perfect for a quilt! The backing is the same dark blue cotton as the front.

The pattern for this quilt is one large diamond and two small diamonds on point in a row in multiple columns. This pattern is a four-square with two opposites being the white, one corner solid blue, and the final opposite being a four-square checker of white and blue.

The verse for this quilt is:

"You were in Eden, the garden of God.

Every precious stone was your covering

—ruby, topaz and diamond, beryl, onyx

and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and emerald—

your settings and your sockets a workmanship of gold

—in the day you were created they were prepared." (Ezekiel 28:13 TLV)

This verse is in the context of God giving Ezekiel a warning for Tyre. He starts by describing the former goodness and perfection of Tyre, drawing a likeness between Tyre and Eden, filled with precious gems with wonderful craftsmanship. However, Tyre has now turned away from God and is unrighteous. God describes how Tyre turned away from Him and profaned Him. This is a warning from God to the king of Tyre that because he turned from God and righteousness, Tyre will become a horror on the earth and no longer a great trading power.

We can see that Tyre used to be perfect and blameless. The verse on this quilt likens Tyre of previous days to being in Eden. Tyre was so perfect in God's eyes that it was if they walked with Him, like Adam once did. Tyre was outfitted beautifully in gems of superior quality, set with skill. What happened? How did Tyre go from walking in the cool of the day with God to being burnt to ashes by the fury of Adonai? The passage explains:

"By the abundance of your trade

they filled you within with violence.

So you have sinned." (Ezekiel 28:16 TLV)

Tyre was a trade power and ended up being corrupted by those they did business with. Trade and business in itself is not a bad thing, quite the opposite. We use trade to use what we have to get what we need and grow our wealth. Our wealth is in turn used for the glory of the Kingdom. However, Tyre allowed themselves to adopt the values of the nations they did trade with. They were filled with violence and unjust principles and turned from their former ways, turning from God.

What can we learn from this? Jesus taught us to be in the world, but not of it. In John 17:13-16 shows how Jesus was in our world and thus was able to come and save our souls, but he was not conformed to the world. He prayed for us to do the same, to be in the world to witness and operate but not the adopt the world's ways. We see with Tyre what happens if one becomes of the world, not just in it. As Christians, we cannot limit all of our interactions with other firm believers. Our coworkers, our neighbors, our friends, and even our families may not be Christians. We are called to be in these situations to witness to them, to show with our behavior how Christ has affected us and the beauty of salvation. However, we are not to conform to their ways. Instead, we are to be forces of change and have them conform to our biblical principles.

This quilt's pattern is diamonds to represent the precious stones that adorned Tyre in Eden, set masterfully and sparkling like a thousand suns. This is the representation of the riches and glory that follows those who walk with God and follow His commandments.
