Exodus 3:14 - I AM Knows When

This quilt is made of square in a square blocks with patterned HST corners. The patterned prints are from two fat quarters set of the same patterns in purple and pink. The background and sashing fabric is a grey buffalo check. The quilt backing is a lilac yardage flannel.

This quilt was made as a gift for my mother to match her favorite colors and patterns. The flannel backing was a special request for this lap quilt to help keep warm in the winter. The verse I chose is one of her favorite verses, Exodus 3:14:

"God answered Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM.' Then He said, 'You are to say to Bnei-Yisrael (Children of Israel), "I AM" has sent me to you.'" (Exodus 3:14 TLV)

This verse comes from Moses's middle age. He was no longer a prince of Egypt, now he was a shepherd for his father-in-law, Jethro. He lived a comfortable life without the glitz and glamour that defined the first forty years of his life. Moses is tending his sheep one day when he comes across a bush on fire, but is not consumed by the fire. As he approaches, the bush calls out to him. Moses is bewildered by responds. Who is this? God responds with this classic verse, "I am who I am", the great "I am". He then commissions Moses go to Pharaoh and tell him to let God's people go.

At this point, Moses is considered to be around eighty years old, two thirds of the way through his life. He spent the first third in the height of luxury, then the next third as a shepherd in the wilderness. The final third he spends with the Israelites in the desert as penance for his temper. What God made him for, his calling, only happened two-thirds through his life! With today's average life times, this is the equivalent of only starting your calling in your early fifties.

Literature and culture have over-inflated the grandeur of fulfilling your great calling early in your life. I understand the sentiment on this; these are impressive feats for young people. However, do you think Moses could've looked upon the glory of God and led the children of Israel as a young man before the stressors of his life that led to his eventual wisdom? Moses couldn't have predicted this, do you think that we can do any better? Only God knows the right time for us to fulfill our destiny. He knows when we have the right experience and wisdom to succeed in our mission.

Don't worry about being well into your life and feeling unfulfilled. Instead, recognize that God is preparing you for your own Exodus moment.
