Come Sunday - Duke Ellington & Mahalia Jackson

This piece, by the Duke himself, was so masterfully written and understanding of scripture that it's now a Gospel classic. I like to call it "Come Shabbat" to reflect the intent of the song. It's about the peace of the sabbath, when G-d takes our cares. He's a faithful G-d, always with us to care for and sustain us.

There's some beautiful imagery taken from Matthew 6:28. Here's the original verse:

"And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They neither toil nor spin." (TLV)

The verse in the song is taken from here, continuing the same message that Yeshua intended in His sermon. The lilies of the valley are jointly with sparrows used to show G-d's masterful planning of the universe. The lilies and the sparrows trust in G-d to provide for them, so why can't we? Aren't we worth more than little bird or tiny flowers?

G-d takes our cares on Shabbat and refreshes us. As He provides for the sparrows and clothes the lilies, He restores on through Shabbat and brings us to a place of perfect rest. The Prophet Isaiah details the blessings that come from G-d for those who respect Shabbat, and I find that it matches this song perfectly.

"If you turn back your foot from Shabbat,

from doing your pleasure on My holy day,

and call Shabbat a delight,

the holy day of Adonai honorable,

If you honor it, not going your own ways,

not seeking your own pleasure,

nor speaking your usual speech,

then You will delight yourself in Adonai,

and I will let you ride over the heights of the earth,

I will feed you with the heritage of your father Jacob.”

For the mouth of Adonai has spoken." (Isaiah 58:13-14 TLV)
